 “The Hackney Empire board has produced little in the way of new thinking to address the problems of the ongoing funding of the theatre and has resorted to becoming the worst sort of property developer in order to cover its losses. Its proposals for a future programme look the same as before. It lacks boldness and vision.
Nothing they have said has been geared towards attracting sufficient grant from the Arts Council or other bodies. I will be asking the board to come forward with a plan for capturing the Empire’s strengths and add a facility of a production team to become a centre of excellence for variety/ cabaret which will specialise in honing the talents of new variety artists from all over London and giving them the opportunity to excel. This can be achieved in addition to its proposed programme. I would, as Mayor, be willing to consider providing seedcorn funding to allow for the change into a producing theatre that Hackney can be proud of.
This “New Direction” will increase the amount of external funding that the Empire attracts up to the level of other producing theatres in London. The Hampstead Theatre, tiny by Empire standards, gets over a third of its turnover from Arts Council Grant. The Empire gets under 12%.
The shows the Empire would produce can then have the chance to tour and attract revenue into the Empire and establish the theatre, once again, as the destination for variety.”
